The teacher’s role
These are the tasks teachers need to perform if they want to successfully coach their students in autonomous vocabulary learning:

The documents below provide information on the knowledge and skills above. They can be used for self-study (= autonomous learning!) or as the basis for a teacher training session on how to coach students in AVL. The institutes participating in the European Flame project have carried out pilot training sessions in their respective countries and new sessions will be organised, even after the official Grundtvig learning partnrship is finished. So, please don’t hesitate to contact the institute of your country (or language) to ask for advice. You can find a contact form on the national websites.

The teacher’s role

- Help the students become aware of their vocabulary needs
- Help the students choose the right tools using the labelling system
- Motivate students to use the tools and activities for AVL
- Monitor the learning process: help the students to keep learning autonomously
- Provide feedback and evaluate the progress
Skills and knowledge needed
In order to perform these tasks, teachers will need some understanding of
- Vocabulary learning
- Autonomous learning
- Learning strategies and tools
- Vocabulary screening and testing
- Motivation in (language) learning
- Feedback on the learning process
They will also need to have the following skills:
- Screen their students’ vocabulary
- Carry out a needs analysis and discuss this with the student
- Understand and use the labeling systems
- Suggest a tool or activity appropriate to the learners’ needs
- Motivate the student to start learning autonomously
- Provide adequate feedback and evaluate the progress
